With a record number of migrants seeking to enter the United States across its southwestern border with Mexico, immigration has emerged as a major issue in the US presidential campaign, the results of which will have a significant effect on future bilateral cooperation on the issue. Meanwhile, Mexico’s new position as a transit route for migrants travelling to the US, rather than the primary origin country, has gradually shaped its domestic immigration debate into one that more closely resembles that in the US.
