Afrocentrism is a research method used to consider Africa by forsaking Eurocentrism. The problem faced by African countries after independence, along with challenges of economic development, was the integration of various ethnic groups with diverse identities in one country. African leaders made an effort to establish the African identity by developing Pan-Africanism in response to decolonization and neocolonialism. Vice president Thabo Mbeki declared the African Renaissance through his speech “I am an African” at a Constitutional Assembly on May 8, 1996. His speech received support from the congress and South Africans, and it played an important role in thinking about the direction in which post-apartheid South Africa and Africa as a whole should be heading. This article will explore the historical context and process of Pan-Africanism from the perspective of Afrocentrism based on South Africa’s African Renaissance. The African Renaissance intends to elucidate the African fate from the point of view of Afrocentrism.
